Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Commercial
PAT testing is an important part of any Health & Safety policy. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) place legal responsibilities and obligations on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonable practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment. This in effect requires the implementation of a systematic and regular programme of maintenance, inspection and testing.
The Lighthouse can carry out your annual PAT test and provide a detailed Asset Register of all the equipment tested and the results; any appliance that is unsafe will be identified, repaired where appropriate, or taken out of use.
There are no specific legal requirements relating to the frequency of PAT tests, a risk assessment needs to be made in relation to the type of equipment, the users of electrical equipment and the environment in which the equipment is used. The Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (ISITEE) (www.theiet.org/publishing/books/wir-reg/cop.cfm) provides information relating to in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. The Health and Safety Executive document INDG236 Maintaining portable electrical equipment in offices and other low-risk environments (www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg236.pdf) is another useful source of information when considering the safety of electrical equipment.
